Planning and Organising
I looked at the start and end dates for the project and divided each part of the project into parts, trying to estimate what proportion of time each part would need. I divided my project into; Research, Idea generation, Development and Final Draft. I divided my time equally between the 4 stages and created my work plan.
As the project went on, the first stages went quite smoothly but the final draft proved somewhat more time-consuming that I anticipated and I missed the scheduled deadline. In retrospect I should probably give a larger proportion of my time to creating the final piece. I would try to speed the other stages where possible to provide some room for error and delays, striving to be ahead of schedule to create a safe 'buffer'.
Research
I gathered a variety of primary and secondary source research for the project. Primary source research was largely sourced in the comic book store 'Worlds Apart'. I took photographs using my camera phone and was drawn into some lateral thinking and drew plenty of inspiration and ideas while trying to remain creatively original.
Secondary research was done by talking to comic-book and graphic novel fans (who helped clarify a lot about who and what the characters are and do) and by internet research. The Marvel official web page and wiki sites were very helpful in particular. I also found many different creative interpretations of comic super characters from the cosplayers of the world, helping to define what was 'iconic' of each character in the eyes of the fans.
The research helped greatly as I was previously quite unaware of all but the most famous super characters and I was drawn into a multiverse of diverse sources of inspiration.
Practical Skills
I used my graphics tablet to draw CarnageRaven in Photoshop and practiced and learned many skills in the process. My talents with traditional media were complemented by using the pen and the many tools in Photoshop such as layering, warping, shading, etc.
The Results
I am quite happy with the finished final piece and think that I answered the brief with a dash of my own style. The features from the 2 source characters are clearly recognisable to fans, such as Raven's distinctive cloak and Carnage's fluid form attached to and growing from the host. Despite the complicated lore, the character's merge seems to depict their personalities as they might be with the curious interaction of the parasitical Carnage, Demonic Trigon and magically gifted but tumultuous Raven.
I am not entirely sure about the background of the design and would like to develop something more complimentary and attractive. I think that the shading was effective but as it was quite time-consuming I could have used my time better by using a simpler method such as 2-3 tone shading without deviating from the comic book style. If I did this project again I would try to manage my time better and use characters that i can easily find plenty of primary research on!
